The Position
Technology and Operations Support (TOS) is responsible for development and implementation of new technology, and operational support to Hydro’s smelters in Norway and abroad. TOS has an exciting agenda, working towards achieving zero emission aluminium production through initiatives like recycling, carbon capture & storage (CCS) solutions, groundbreaking new process technology and digital solutions. TOS is a highly skilled organization in Hydro with over 200 employees connected to our technology hubs in Norway and Germany.
We are looking for a Graduate Project Engineer to strengthen our CCS-team. The field of CCS is rapidly evolving, both in Hydro and globally, and it is one of three pillars in Hydro’s strategy to reduce our carbon footprint. Aluminium production is considered one of the “hard-to-abate” industries where no mature, cost-efficient carbon capture technology exists. To deliver on our ambitious decarbonization agenda, technology development is required, and we are in the early phases of test and pilot projects. We are searching for a person who is motivated by this challenge and is looking to contribute to shaping the path forward.
The department
The position is organized under New Technologies, a department in Technology and Operational Support (TOS), comprising of colleagues in Oslo, Porsgrunn, Neuss (Germany), and Årdal. This department is dedicated to the development of CCS from aluminium production, and HalZero.
Key Responsibilities
The position will be a part of a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to the development and implementation of CCS-technology to decarbonize Hydro’s production units. Responsibilities includes:
-
Technology screening and feasibility studies
-
Planning and execution of experimental activity (lab and/or large-scale trials)
-
Contribute to the development of new ideas from paper to product
-
Implementation of new technology in an industrial context
-
Contribute to the development of the competence in the group
Who Are You?
We are searching for colleagues who value collaboration, shared experiences, and care about each other and the environment we work in.
To excel in this role, curiosity, and a passion for continuous learning, coupled with the ability to collaborate, is crucial. Safety is our top priority in all that we do, and we expect you to share this commitment.
Sustainability is a fundamental aspect of Hydro's future strategy, and we invite you to actively contribute to our agenda aimed at reducing our carbon footprint and expanding our commitment to renewables.
Desired competencies
-
Master’s or PhD degree in material science/technology, inorganic chemistry, process engineering or chemical engineering with strong academic results
-
A maximum of two years of full-time work experience after graduation
-
Extracurricular activities and/or voluntary work will be considered an advantage
-
Fluency in written and spoken English and preferably fluency in a Scandinavian language
-
A profound curiosity and eagerness to learn and develop
-
Proficiency in programming (e.g., Python) is a plus

The position is based in Årdal. Årdal is the biggest location in TOS and home to Årdal Reference Center, Hydro’s test arena for electrolysis technology. Årdal offers a unique opportunity to work in a cutting-edge technology environment in combination with access to spectacular nature with endless opportunities year-round.
