Job Summary:
The Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Manager is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive safety programs, policies, and procedures to ensure a safe and compliant workplace. This role involves conducting risk assessments, providing training, and maintaining accurate records to promote a culture of safety and environmental responsibility. Environmental compliance monitoring is a priority for this position, including supporting sustainable practices and projects. The HSE Manager will report to the Operations Manager.
Required Education/Experience:
- BA/BS degree in Occupational Safety and Health Management, Environmental Sciences, Engineering or related field
- Minimum 5 years progressive HSE responsibilities in a manufacturing environment
- Minimum 5 years of experience in training course development, computer-based training programs and training tracking systems
- CRSP certification is a plus
Preferred Skills/Qualifications:
- Effective communication skills with co-workers, supervisors, and managers in both written and verbal forms; must exhibit a professional and positive approach
- Experience with Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) programs, Lean/Continuous Improvement/Six Sigma training/certification, and 5S training/certification is advantageous
- Administration and working knowledge of ISO14001:2015, 45001:2019
- Proficiency with leading office software programs (e.g., Excel, Word, and Access)
- Adherence to Health, Safety & Environmental requirements
- Compliance with company rules, policies, and procedures
- Understanding that performing job tasks safely is the highest priority
- Ability to stand or sit for extended periods
- Occasional bending, reaching, grasping, and lifting of 5-25 lbs
- Necessary hearing, vision, and speech capabilities to perform all job functions
- Must have working knowledge of Canadian occupational safety legislation (OH&S Act) and environmental reporting and regulations. Knowledge of Canada occupational health and safety (CCOHS) and environmental (ECCC) regulations and recordkeeping is a strong asset
Job Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement company-wide safety programs, policies, and procedures, ensuring effective communication to all employees. Promptly alert management to serious safety issues and collaborate on effective solutions
- Ensure that management completes accident investigations and prepares serious incident reports accurately
- Support environmental recordkeeping and administration, including compliance with permits, operating conditions, sampling, and regulatory standards
- Carry out internal self-assessments or audits for compliance checks with ISO standards
- Maintain multi-site ISO 14001:2015 and 45001:2018 certification
- Maintain current and accurate information on the company’s Incident Management System website. Keep safety records, including training, evacuations, and accident and incident records
- Identify and assist in correcting unsafe conditions within the company. Conduct and manage risk assessments as necessary
- Conduct periodic environmental health and safety inspections. Support department managers and supervisors in following action plans to resolve safety and environmental issues
- Develop and provide company-wide training to employees in accordance with OH&S Act, OSHA, environmental regulations, and company standards. Co-chair Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings and manage the Early Safe Return to Work (ESRTW) program
- Coach site leadership and personnel to a HSE interdependent culture
- Perform other duties as assigned
