Advanced Manufacturing Engineer

Extruded Solutions is Hydro’s largest and most global business area. Our Business Area supplies aluminum profiles and profile-based solutions in various applications ranging from windows and furniture to cars and cruise ships. Within Extruded Solutions, we have business area staff functions based in Oslo, but we also have four core business units; Extrusion Europe, Extrusion North America, Building Systems and Precision Tubing.

Summary: The Advanced Manufacturing Engineer will assist the product development team in the launch of new manufacturing lines for fabricated aluminum products and assemblies at the Hydro Phoenix fabrication center. Also, assist in developing improvements to existing manufacturing lines to improve productivity.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Maintain plant safety through all manufacturing engineering activities.
  • Assist in the selection of new equipment and tools for fabrication lines.
  • Assist in estimating process cycle times.
  • Assist Product Development in the launch of new products by setting up new production fabrication lines including cut to length, miter, CNC, bending, welding and assembly.
  • Set up, program, conditioning and approve manufacturing tooling through the PPAP process.
  • Select and order tooling to support product launch, machine operations and process improvements.
  • Collaborate with production operators plant Manufacturing engineers to write and maintain production work instructions to ensure processes are accurate and are being followed.
  • Conduct time studies on new product processes to capture current operation process cycle times and make improvements to increase output and reduce labor.
  • Propose and implement improvements to fabrication processes to increase output.
  • Propose and implement improvements to fabrication processes to improve product quality or error proof manufacturing processes.
  • Assist Manufacturing Engineers in development and implementation of manufacturing process improvements, which foster Continuous Flow Manufacturing principles
  • Assist in developing PPAP documents for customer approval. Assist in developing and updating PFMEAs and control plans working with multi-functional teams.

  

Job Requirements:

  • Creative product and/or manufacturing engineering background with ability to set up and maintain fabrication manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to analyze processes and propose and implement changes to improve manufacturing cost and/or improve quality.  
  • Ability and experience to calculate takt time and overall cycle time.
  • Strong fabrication manufacturing background, aluminum extrusion design and manufacturing knowledge is a plus.
  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office suite and SolidWorks 3D modeling is a requirement.
  • Ability to design tooling fixtures is a plus.
  • Ability to program CNC machines.
  • PC controls knowledge is a plus.
  • Knowledge of 6 Sigma, Lean manufacturing methods, statistical process control highly desirable.
  • Able to read and interpret blueprints and schematics, working knowledge of GD&T standards and metrology.
  • Able to read CMM reports and provide guidance for CMM inspection.
     

Education and Work Requirements:

  • Minimum requirement of BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent education/experience.
  • Must be able to read and understand all work and safety instructions in English. 
  • Must be able to use and maintain all basic tools and measuring equipment pertinent to this specific position.
  • Minimum 10+ years experience in manufacturing engineering would be preferred.
  • Automotive and APQP experience.
  • SolidWorks related experience is preferred.
  • Experience in other 3D modeling software will be considered.
  • Basic lean and/or industrial engineering knowledge – process flow, equipment and line layout, ergonomics, etc.
  • Experience in the fabrication of metal components including extruding, machining, stamping, punching and assembly is a plus.
