The positions 

As a Graduate, you will work alongside experienced engineers to develop the aluminium production technology of the future. The work and tasks will be focused towards development of HalZero– our new process for zero-CO2 aluminium. A basis for all positions is a good understanding of chemistry, curiosity, and a constant willingness to learn. Examples of tasks you may be involved in are development of new materials, material qualification, chemical analysis of gas/liquid/solids, process development and equipment design. You will be exposed both to hands-on laboratory work and desktop studies. The positions will be part of the HalZero Group and work associated with our extensive R&D laboratories and piloting activity. 

 

The HalZero Group reports to the New Technologies department which in turn is part of Technology and Operational Support (TOS). TOS is responsible for development, implementation and the operational support to Hydro’s smelters in Norway and abroad. In addition, TOS has an exciting agenda, working towards achieving zero emission aluminium production, through initiatives like carbon capture & storage solutions and the groundbreaking new process technology HalZero. 

 

The TOS unit is a highly skilled organization in Hydro with around 220 employees connected to our technology hubs in Norway and Germany, representing a wide range of technical expertise. Together we work to push the boundaries of low carbon aluminium. You will be part of a strong competence network both in and outside of Hydro with continuous possibility to develop your own knowledge and skillset.

Work location is Porsgrunn. Starting date for the positions is fall 2025.

Areas of responsibility 

  • Project participation in ongoing projects towards HalZero development 
  • Project management, including planning, execution and reporting 
  • Planning, follow-up and reporting experimental activity (lab, pilot and/or full scale trials) 
  • Contribute to the development of new ideas from paper to product 
  • Contribute to the group’s development of both competence and capabilities

Qualifications: 

  • Master or PhD degree in Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Physics, Nanotechnology, Inorganic Chemistry, Process Chemistry / Engineering, Metallurgy, Analytical Chemistry or Electrochemistry with strong academic results. 
  • Maximum two years of full-time work experience after graduation (from MSc or PhD) 
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and preferably fluency in a Scandinavian language 
  • Extracurricular activities and/or voluntary work will be considered an advantage 
  • A profound curiosity and eagerness to learn and develop 

 

Some key elements of your structured onboarding during the initial 12 months are:  

  • Thorough introduction program and follow-up  
  • Onboarding sessions as well as local trainings and seminars  
  • Social and professional gatherings with involvement from management in Hydro    
  • Dedicated buddy/mentor throughout the program
