Hydro Aluminium Metal a leading supplier of extrusion ingots, sheet ingots, foundry alloys, wire rods and high-purity aluminum with a global production network of around 5,000 employees. With primary metal production facilities in Europe, Canada, Australia, Brazil and Qatar, and recycling facilities throughout Europe and in the U.S., two-thirds of our primary aluminum production is based on renewable energy.

Through projects such as HalZero, our groundbreaking CO₂-emission-free process for producing primary aluminum, we continue to push the boundaries of industrial innovation. 

 

The Separation Technology team within the HalZero Technology Development department is integral to realizing this ambition. To further strengthen our capabilities and ensure technical robustness, we are seeking a motivated and technically skilled Project Engineer to support key initiatives within gas cooling, absorption, and crystallization technologies, essential components of the HalZero roadmap.

 

Main Responsibilities 

As a Project Engineer you will contribute directly to the development, testing, qualification, and implementation of innovative technologies in the HalZero program. Your focus will be on separation technologies, including: 

  • Driving and contributing to the industrialization of the HalZero process. 
  • Designing, developing, and optimizing gas cooling, absorption, and crystallization systems. 
  • Leading or participating in R&D projects across the HalZero technology framework. 
  • Collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders, including research partners and suppliers. 
  • Supporting the design, setup, and operation of laboratory and pilot-scale experiments. 
  • Participating in structured testing and validation activities to support technology qualification. 
  • Ensuring clear reporting, documentation, and knowledge transfer across the organization.

Desired Qualifications 

  • MSc or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering/Chemistry, Environmental Engineering/Science, Sustainability, Material Science, Metallurgy or Physics. 
  • 5–15 years of relevant experience, primarily in industry settings; academic experience may be considered if it includes substantial collaboration with or application to industry. 

 

Key Competencies

  • Strong background in unit operations, particularly cooling, condensation, absorption, and crystallization. 
  • Experience with chlorine and chloride gas systems. 
  • Solid hands-on skills in laboratory experimentation, pilot testing, or plant operation. 
  • Proficiency in process modelling, simulation, and validation is advantageous. 
  • Demonstrated capability in project development, management, and delivery, especially in R&D settings.  
  • Excellent teamwork, communication, and documentation skills. 
  • Fluency in written and spoken English; Norwegian language skills are an advantage.

This position is based in Porsgrunn, Norway (Herøya Industrial Park) and will be reporting to the Development Manager Separation
