Die Technician

1st shift

Scope:

Perform duties to prepare caustic tanks, clean and route dies to proper location and assemble up and store dies for production. Plan, inspect and correct MPE dies. Comply with instructions and prescribed routines, methods and procedures.

Essential Functions:

  • Work from schedules and procedures, determine necessity to break down dies, shear butt off and store or transport dies to the caustic room. Prepare sodium hydroxide solution in cleaning tanks in accordance with standard operating and safety procedures. Place dies and die rings in cleaning solution to dissolve aluminum. Remove dies and die rings from solution following prescribed period, disassemble, rinse and dry. Operate and monitor nitriding furnance.
  • Press inserts from dies and sand blast or shot blast dies and inserts to remove hardened graphite residue and aluminum scale. Inspect dies after cleaning to detect wear, broken parts or die damages. Inform die technicians of any damage. Transport dies to designated areas. Drain and clean caustic tanks following established procedures.
  • Select and remove dies and backers from storage racks as required for production. Check dies for cleanliness and place in production tub at the die setup area. Inspect support tooling for dimensional accuracy and hardness at prescribed intervals.
  • Communicate die schedules to technicians and organize die availability with scheduling department and press personnel.
  • Work from product specifications, design drawings, schedules, priority lists, die pull lists, extrusion prints and procedures.
  • Ensure that dies are in suitable condition prior to scheduled usage. Check dies against specifications, disassemble dies, inspect angles, surgaces, alignment and dimensions and make or arrange for modifications.
  • Schedule and monitor die trials. Review extrusions resulting from trials. Determine and make required corrections to dies as required to meet specifications within very close tolerances, maintaining flat and square angles and dimensions, working under directions.
  • Assist in analyzing production and sample information to solve die and quality problems.
  • Control inventory of tube dies and inserts. Input production information into computer as requried.

Your qualifications and skills

  • Ability to use mathematics together with visualizing and the use of complicated blueprints and to use all varieties of precision measuring instruments, such as micrometers, hardness tester, calipers, and comparator.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and simple reference material such as production orders and schedules.
  • Strong analytical ability to plan, alter, inspect, assemble and correct insert dies.
  • Manual dexterity to use a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Concentrated mental and visual attention required to measure dies to very close limits of high accuracy and quality.
  • Ability to drive a fork lift, operate an overhead crane, jib crane, and receive respirator certifications and hazardous waste training.
  • Good written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Knowledge of process related standards.
  • Ability to think critically and theoretically
