Quality Engineer

Job Summary: The Quality Engineer is responsibilities for shop-floor operator interaction, data analysis for continuous improvement of products, processes, and operator knowledge. The Quality Engineering function is the core of the quality group innovation. Resources tasked with this function should be true engineering minds who can see inefficiencies, understand the metallurgy of the product and thrive on the shop floor working to solve problems alongside the operators. They should be proficient in mass scale data analysis and interpretation and can communicate with and can relate to the mindset of an operator. Resources in these positions should be highly proficient in training and coaching.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Daily Shop Floor Problem Solving: Works almost exclusively on the shop floor daily alongside operators infusing quality thinking and local problem solving for cultural transition.
  • Trains / Coaches Shop Floor Personnel: Supports learning organization initiative through daily teaching / coaching on the shop floor. Imparts technical knowledge of the process and reactionary logic based on process deviation observation.
  • Conducts Shop Floor Trials: Coordinates internal product / process trials and serves as NATC liaison for new product development initiatives in the plant.
  • Analyzes Data Mass Scale: Utilizes mass scale data analysis and statistics to identify and resolve process issues at their root cause. Measures the process.
  • Engages in Benchmarking: Works with counterparts across the organization to benchmark and standardize best practices. Works to define True North performance levels for KPIs at each unit.
  • Compliance & Ethical Behavior: Demonstrated high standard for excellence and core belief in quality compliance, accuracy in reporting and ethical behavior within a manufacturing environment (laboratories, in particular). Must be capable of coaching and training direct reports on subjects of compliance and ethic

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Metallurgy is preferred but a degree in a related field will be considered
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a related role preferably in a manufacturing environment

 

Demonstrated Abilities:

  • Good problem-solving skills including the use of the problem-solving tools such as A3’s, fishbones, 5 why’s, etc.
  • Understanding the calibration process including the scheduling and maintenance of equipment.
  • In-depth knowledge of a world class 5S program
  • Understanding legal and compliance issues including maintaining a dept. that understands and complies with all ethical and legal requirements
  • Understanding the quality and lab inventory, vendors and supply system to ensure critical parts and components are always available
  • Understanding tier 3 level of PPAP’s for automotive applications including part submission warrants, FMEA’s and control plans.
  • Understanding the homogenizing survey process and ensuring schedule is maintained.
