Senior Project Engineer, HalZero
Porsgrunn, Telemark, NO, 3936
Hydro is a global aluminium company striving to be a leader in working towards a sustainable future. In December 2021, we announced our plans to develop and industrialize HalZero, a new CO₂ emission-free process for producing primary aluminium.
The development of HalZero is one of three pillars in Hydro’s initiative to deliver aluminium with nearly net-zero CO₂ emissions. HalZero is a new and innovative way to produce aluminium, where no CO₂ is emitted during the production process. In December 2025, we completed construction of the HalZero Test Facility in Porsgrunn. Industrializing the HalZero process requires extensive development, including laboratory work, design and operation of our Test Faciliy and pilots, and engineering and construction of demo and full commercial plants.
The work towards CO₂ emission-free aluminium production is led by the Technology, Operational Support and Projects (TOP) unit in Hydro Aluminium Metal. TOP consists of 300 skilled employees in Norway and Germany, whose main task is to support commercial and operational units in improving profitability and sustainability both in the short and long term.
HalZero is strengthening its team in several areas to support the further development of the technology and we now look for a senior Project Engineer to strengthen our team within the Technology Development department.
What we offer you
- The opportunity to join an industrial development project (HalZero) from its early phase
- A unique chance to contribute fundamental knowledge to the development of a new technology in a company investing in the future
- Collaboration with skilled colleagues in a multidisciplinary research environment with strong expertise at Herøya and throughout TOP
- Good opportunities for personal development
What you will be doing
As Senior Project Engineer, your main responsibility is to participate in projects related to Hydro’s sustainability agenda, particularly HalZero. This includes development, evaluation, testing at lab/pilot scale, qualification and implementation of both internally and externally developed technology solutions.
Main tasks are:
- Contribute to making HalZero an industrialized process for aluminium production, ensuring robust, scalable and sustainable gas treatment solutions.
- Participate in process design, engineering, relevant risk assessment and operation of gas treatment equipment and systems.
- Plan and execute experimental test campaigns at lab and pilot scale, and translate results into design and operational improvements.
- Provide input to development of operation strategies and design choices for industrial gas treatment, drawing on hands-on experience from lab/pilot operation.
- Participate in or lead projects related to HalZero together with both internal and external partners/stakeholders.
What will make you successful?
- MSc/PhD in Chemical/Process/Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering/Science (with air emissions/gas treatment specialization), Materials Engineering/Science, Inorganic Chemistry, Heterogeneous catalysis
- Minimum 10 years' experience in relevant field
- Experience with industrial gas treatment/purification and process design of chemical or gas handling‑ systems (e.g., scrubbers, absorbers, filtration, catalytic systems). Experience with chlorine/chloride-containing gas streams is an advantage
- Competence in planning, executing and analyzing experimental test campaigns
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, including engineering partners and suppliers
- Solid problem solving‑ skills, and experience from complex R&D/technology development programs targeting industrial application
- Good HSE mindset and ability to foster a positive safety culture. Familiarity with process safety and HAZID/HAZOP or similar risk assessments is an advantage
- Knowledge of process modelling and simulation tools is an advantage (e.g., Aspen, HYSYS, MATLAB, Python, CFD)
- Fluency in written and spoken English; Norwegian is an advantage
As a person, you communicate clearly and work well with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. You are structured, reliable and open‑minded, and you thrive in collaborative, multidisciplinary environments. You share competence readily, build alignment with colleagues, and approach tasks in a practical and safety‑oriented way. You remain calm and focused under pressure.
